One of my favorite variations of a Margarita is the Skinny Margarita.
The Skinny Margarita is a type of margarita that was popular in the 2000s and coined by Bethany Frankel who was in the Real Housewives of NYC.
The idea of a Skinny Margarita is that it is a “healthier” version of a margarita with less “sugar.”
If were being honest here, a Skinny Margarita isn’t THAT much healthier than a regular Margarita, and I’ll tell you why.
For one, you still have the important element of tequila, and newsflash alcohol is not good for you, no matter how hard you try to spin it in your favor. It just simply isn’t healthy.
As far as lessening the sugar, basically you replace the orange liqueur with orange juice and add agave to balance out the tartness.
Now, agave, is still a heavily processed type of syrup, just like most other sugars on the market. I guess it’s only “healthier” because it’s not a sweetened alcohol compared to the orange liqueur in a traditional margarita.
Anyway, thanks for letting me get on my soap box to kind of explain the misconception of how a Skinny Margarita is a “healthier” version of a margarita.
Now don’t get it twisted, like I said before in the first sentence, the Skinny Margarita is one of my favorite types of margaritas. It is a very very tasty cocktail.
I absolutely LOVE the taste of the fresh orange juice combined with the tequila and lime. AND it is definitely a more affordable way to make a margarita, if you’re trying not to break the bank.
So let’s go ahead and make this fabulously simple margarita!
